Living in The Bahamas for a week was one of the greatest experiences in my life. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to volunteer, live, and learn the culture while I was there. I met very amazing people, people that truly changed my life.
The first day we got there, we drove over to the church. All of the girls were staying in one giant room with mattresses on the floors. That was the first moment that we realized we were there to volunteer and not for vacation. We went to lunch in a restaurant right on the ocean and it was absolutely gorgeous. We saw an octopus in the crystal clear water right next to a tire that someone threw in.
The first day we were there we went and volunteered at a place called Pitt Road. We put on work gloves and we started painting houses bright colors, blue and green. We really like talking to the people and learning about their culture. A man who lived there was teaching us about one of the giant festivals that they have and showed us all the homemade drums and costumes for the parade. There were so many people who lived in such few houses that were very run down. They still were able to have smiles on their faces. We went to lunch in the park with the children and plead with them.
That night we were lucky enough to go to a beautiful beach. The next day we went back to Pitt Road and finished painting some of the houses. After we left there, we went to a house a couple blocks away and built a wheelchair ramp out of concrete. We mixed the concrete in the hot sun and laid it out. It was very hard work but it was a great bonding experience for all of us. The local police officers came over and thanked us for our work.
The next day we went over and volunteered at the Red Cross. The Red Cross was very run down and it was very sad to see how little money they had. We did tasks to help clean up the place and it was a great example of indirect service. I ended up painting a room bright orange but it was fun because I was with my friends. We got to go to another gorgeous beach that night.
We volunteered at a place that housed people who were older and sick. We delivered lunch to them that we made earlier in the day. It was a really great experience to see a smile on all those people's faces. We heard wonderful stories about people as they grew up. They really liked talking to us because they didn't really have many people to talk to.
The last day we were there we got to volunteer at a children's home. We got to hang out with children who were orphans and play with them for a couple of hours. Was a great way to end the volunteer part of our trip.
Volunteering in The Bahamas was an experience that changed my life. Though we went to a different beach every night, we got to experience the culture and actually help people while we were there.I lived in the so called slums for a week and I learned more about culture and life then I ever have before.
