I remember growing up and hearing all about conch (conk) shells on popular TV shows such as Sponge Bob. I even had one in my room. The story is that when you put your ear up to the opening, you can hear the ocean, when it is actually just the blood rushing around in your head. The conch shell in The Bahamas means a lot to the people who live there and it is big part of life and culture. The first day we got there, we went to a restaurant and many people in my group ordered conch salad thinking it was a normal salad. When they got it, they realized that it was a salad with many fruits and vegetables and pieces of conch. This restaurant specialized in serving conch, and there were a ton of empty shells outside in the trash can.
People in the Bahamas, are very good at making conch salad and know exactly what to do. It's a big deal to gather all the ingredients and make it. People even sell it on the street to make a living. One day when we were there, we learned how to make it. We were able to pull out the conch from the shell when it was still alive. It was very cool to try and pull it out and have it pull back. Learning how to make conch salad was a big part of the culture that I learned while I was there. I had a great perspective of what it is like to make something important to the culture in The Bahamas.
