The following is an interview with one of my fellow participants from my trip to The Bahamas.
What made you want to go on a service trip to The Bahamas?
"I really like the idea of the service trip and it was really nice that it was in the Bahamas. I wanted to go because I knew I would meet great people and have an amazing time. I knew Bahamas was a hot vacation spot, but when I heard that a lot of the country is very poor I knew I wanted to do something. I also knew that by going to a nice place I would have some sort of fun time being a tourist in addition to serving the community and volunteering."
Was cost an issue when deciding whether not you wanted to go on the trip?
"The trip was fairly expensive, but then I have to remember that it was out of the country. The cost of the trip was nothing when I think about what I got out of it. The majority of the cost of the trip was just a plane ticket and a lot of what we spent went to the organization to get building materials and for food for us during the week."
What was your favorite part of the service trip?
"My favorite part of the trip was volunteering with the children. The kids were super amazing and I really like working with them. It was really fun when we went to the park with them and just played around and talked with them. It was sad to think about how poor they were, but they were so happy with the little they had."
Would you do service in The Bahamas in the future?
"I would definitely want to go to the Bahamas in the future and volunteer. It would be hard to go back to the Bahamas in the future as a tourist and not volunteer. I know those kids are there and I would love to see them again and volunteer on Pitt Road."
If you could change one thing about the trip what would you change?
"The only thing I would change about the trip is what we did on the last day. We didn't get to see as much of the island as we wanted, we just drove around for a lot of the day. I wish we got to do more touristy things in the city. All the places we volunteered at were amazing.:
