When I was volunteering in The Bahamas, we were in a very poor area called Pitt Road. The families who live there live in very poor conditions with many people, including many children, in each house. We spent days there painting houses in the hot sun. We got very close to the people who live there and when we had to say goodbye it was very hard. On our lunch breaks, we would take the children to the park and play with them. It was very hard to eat lunch in front of them when they don't have any food to eat. We took them to the convenient store and I bought several of them a small thing to eat. They were so thankful and I felt so happy after doing that.
The last day we were there it was really hard to say bye to them. I didn't want to just leave the children. I remembered I had little plastic things that I made. They are made out of perler beads with the ironing board and I brought them to The Bahamas by accident. I didn't have many, but the ones I had I gave away and the children were so happy. I really felt like I had brighten their day by giving them such a small token. I loved that they wanted to take a picture holding them proudly in the air. Shortly after I took this picture, they all ran away showing them to their parents. It was a great way to end volunteering on Pitt Road.
